Oddar Meanchey, Cambodia — 15 January 2026 — According to a press release issued by Oxfam Cambodia, the Australian Government, in partnership with Oxfam, has delivered urgent humanitarian assistance to thousands of families displaced by the Cambodia–Thailand border clashes, providing critical support to some of the country’s most vulnerable communities.
The assistance targets displaced populations in Oddar Meanchey Province and four other affected provinces, aiming to ease hardship and respond to urgent humanitarian needs caused by ongoing displacement linked to the conflict.
Oxfam Cambodia reported that on 15 January, the distribution of financial assistance began for 3,050 displaced families living in displacement camps across Preah Vihear, Siem Reap, Oddar Meanchey, and Banteay Meanchey provinces. The cash assistance is intended to help families meet immediate needs, including food, shelter, clean water, and essential household supplies, while supporting dignity and stability during a period of crisis.
At Chong Kal Thmey camp in Oddar Meanchey Province, the distribution reached 1,519 displaced families. The event was attended by H.E. Derek Yip, Ambassador of Australia to the Kingdom of Cambodia, Ms. Sophoan Phean, National Director of Oxfam in Cambodia, H.E. Chanyada Mean, Governor of Oddar Meanchey Province, and representatives from local partner organizations. Their presence highlighted the close coordination between the Australian Government, Oxfam, and local authorities in responding to humanitarian emergencies.
Speaking at the event, H.E. Chanyada Mean, Governor of Oddar Meanchey Province, expressed appreciation for the support, stating, “We are grateful for the support from Australia and Oxfam. This assistance will bring immediate relief to families in our province and shows the importance of international cooperation in humanitarian response.” The Governor also called for continued efforts to help ensure that the ceasefire is maintained permanently.
H.E. Derek Yip, Australian Ambassador to Cambodia, reaffirmed Australia’s long-standing partnership with Cambodia and its commitment to humanitarian assistance. “Australia has been a steadfast and trusted partner for Cambodia for decades. The challenges facing Cambodian civilians displaced by the conflict are significant, and Australia has stepped up to provide urgent assistance in the form of clean drinking water, food, shelter, sanitation, and financial support,” he said. He added that Australia hopes the ceasefire will be upheld so that displaced families can return safely to their homes.
According to Ms. Sophoan Phean, National Director of Oxfam in Cambodia, humanitarian assistance must go beyond emergency relief. “With the support of the Australian Government, we are able to provide lifesaving assistance while also working with communities and partners to build longer-term solutions. Humanitarian support is not only about meeting urgent needs today, but also about laying the foundation for recovery and a more just future,” she said. Ms. Sophoan noted that while this is the first humanitarian response supported by the Australian Government through Oxfam, it represents Oxfam’s sixth humanitarian intervention since July 2025, reflecting the scale of needs faced by displaced families.
Oxfam Cambodia stated that the cash distribution in Oddar Meanchey forms part of Australia’s US$250,000 humanitarian support package, implemented through Oxfam to assist Cambodians displaced by the conflict. With this funding, Oxfam will continue to provide clean water and sanitation services, food assistance, and emergency shelter to affected communities.
The initiative underscores Australia’s continued commitment to humanitarian assistance in Cambodia and highlights Oxfam Cambodia’s role in coordinating relief efforts with local authorities and partners.
It also reflects the broader cooperation between Australia and Cambodia in supporting recovery, resilience, and long-term development for communities affected by conflict and displacement.
