Apple Releases iOS 26.5 RC 2 for Public Beta Users Ahead of Official Launch

CUPERTINO, California, May 2026 — Apple has officially released a new Release Candidate (RC) build of iOS 26.5 and iPadOS 26.5 for Public Beta users, signaling that the software is nearing its final public rollout.

The latest build number, 23F77, replaces last week’s RC build 23F75, indicating that Apple has addressed several last-minute bugs, performance concerns, and stability improvements before the official release becomes available to all users.

The RC build represents the final stage of Apple’s beta testing cycle and is typically identical to the version eventually released publicly unless critical issues are discovered during final testing.

Unlike major annual updates, iOS 26.5 is designed primarily as a refinement-focused release. The update combines visible feature improvements with under-the-hood optimizations aimed at enhancing system stability, connectivity, and interoperability across Apple’s ecosystem.

One of the most notable changes in iOS 26.5 is the continued development of Apple Maps enhancements. The update introduces Suggested Places, a feature that recommends nearby locations based on user activity, trends, and preferences. Apple is also laying the groundwork for future advertising features within Apple Maps, including sponsored search recommendations expected to launch later this year.

Another key improvement focuses on accessory connectivity. iOS 26.5 now enables Bluetooth pairing over USB for Apple accessories such as Magic Keyboard and Magic Mouse, streamlining setup and improving reliability for users connecting accessories to their devices.

Apple is also continuing to implement region-specific updates tied to the European Union’s Digital Markets Act (DMA). These interoperability features are currently being tested in EU regions as Apple adapts its ecosystem to comply with new regulatory requirements.

Additional improvements in iOS 26.5 include better support for third-party accessories, expanded Live Activities functionality, notification forwarding enhancements, and ongoing optimization for system performance and battery stability.

The update also introduces a redesigned custom wallpaper experience, allowing users to create personalized wallpapers with up to 11 different color combinations. The feature has received positive feedback from beta testers, particularly on iPhones equipped with always-on displays, where smoother transitions and enhanced visual effects create a more dynamic user experience.

Support for encrypted Rich Communication Services (RCS) messaging is another important addition. Once carriers adopt the latest GSMA Universal Profile specifications, users will benefit from expanded encrypted messaging capabilities beyond Apple’s iMessage platform.

Although most changes in iOS 26.5 are incremental rather than transformative, the release is viewed as an important stability update that prepares Apple’s ecosystem for larger software innovations expected later this year.

Looking ahead, Apple is widely expected to unveil iOS 27, macOS 27, and additional next-generation platform updates during WWDC 2026 next month.

Apple has not yet announced an official release date for iOS 26.5 and iPadOS 26.5, but the arrival of the Release Candidate build strongly suggests the public launch is only days away.

Users already running iOS 26.5 RC are encouraged to share their experiences and report any newly discovered features as Apple finalizes preparations for the worldwide release.
