PHNOM PENH,The U.S. Embassy in Cambodia has reaffirmed the importance of the Kuala Lumpur Peace Agreement in ending armed clashes between Cambodia and Thailand, as the United Nations' Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in Cambodia conducts a fact-finding mission that includes assessing the humanitarian and human rights impact of the border conflict.

In a statement posted on its official Facebook page on July 29, 2026, the U.S. Embassy in Phnom Penh recalled that fighting along the Cambodia–Thailand border last year resulted in loss of life, the displacement of families, and prolonged uncertainty for communities on both sides of the frontier.

The embassy said that three months after the fighting, President Donald Trump helped broker the Kuala Lumpur Peace Agreement, describing it as a historic diplomatic framework that ended hostilities and created a pathway for addressing the long-standing border dispute between the two countries.

"While there is still work to be done, the agreement continues to provide Cambodia and Thailand with a practical framework to reduce tensions and prevent a return to conflict. The United States remains committed to supporting lasting peace," the embassy said.

 

Meanwhile, Thomas Andrews, the United Nations Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in Cambodia, is undertaking his first official visit to the country from July 20 to July 31, 2026, to assess the human rights situation and engage with a broad range of stakeholders.

During the mission, Andrews has held meetings with senior Cambodian government officials, representatives of state institutions, political parties, civil society organizations, human rights defenders and other stakeholders to gather information and hear different perspectives on human rights developments and ongoing challenges in the country.

As part of his visit, Andrews and his delegation traveled to Boeung Trakuon and nearby border areas in Banteay Meanchey Province to examine the impact of the Cambodia–Thailand border conflict on local communities, particularly displaced families and civilians affected by the violence.

According to information presented by Cambodian authorities during the visit, local communities experienced the loss of homes, farmland and livelihoods, while many displaced residents have yet to return safely to their villages.

Some residents living along the border expressed hope that the Special Rapporteur's field visit would draw greater international attention to their situation and that their experiences would be reflected in his report to the U.N. Human Rights Council.

Political figures, civil society organizations and human rights advocates have also welcomed the mission, saying that direct observation in the affected areas could help the Special Rapporteur better understand the human rights consequences of the border conflict and provide an independent assessment based on first-hand information gathered from multiple stakeholders.

The visit comes as international attention remains focused on efforts to preserve the ceasefire and encourage a peaceful resolution of the Cambodia–Thailand border dispute. The U.S. Embassy's renewed support for the peace agreement and the U.N. Special Rapporteur's ongoing assessment underscore continued international engagement in promoting peace, protecting human rights and supporting long-term stability along the border.

As of publication, Thomas Andrews has not yet released his official findings or final report on his mission to Cambodia.
